Fall Drama

FALL DRAMA 2022 November 17-19 Wendy Wasserstein's The Heidi Chronicles

Play Description:

The play follows Heidi Holland from the ages of 16 to 40. Heidi is a scholar and professor of art history who studies representations of women in portraiture, particularly in paintings by women artists. The play is Heidi’s self-portrait as she explores her desires for her own life, inspired by the liberation of feminism, but tempered by gendered expectations in a patriarchal society. Eventually Heidi comes to accept the fact that liberation can be achieved only if one is true to oneself, with goals that come out of need and personal interest rather than abstract philosophy.

In 1989, its first performance year, author Wendy Wasserstein was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and “The Heidi Chronicles” won Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Featured Actor in a Play (Boyd Gaines). “The Heidi Chronicles” also won two Drama Desk awards, for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Actor in a Play (Peter Friedman), as well as the New York Drama Critics’ Award for Best Play. Critics nationwide celebrated “The Heidi Chronicles” for introducing feminism into mainstream theater.
